Five 1 billion dollars, the Norwegian king of the large order of container ships

SFL Corporation, a subsidiary of Norwegian shipowner John Fredriksen, has placed an order with New Era Shipbuilding for five LNG dual-fuel 16,000 TEU neo-Panamax containerships scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2028, according to Trade Winds. Each new vessel will cost about $200 million, with a total value of about $1 billion (about RMB 7.268 billion), and it is unclear whether the contract includes any options.

For reference, an LNG dual-fuel 15,000-16,000 TEU containership newbuilding is currently priced at $199 million, according to Clarkson, up 4 percent from $192 million in July last year.

This is the first time Fredriksen has ordered a container ship in recent years. Clarkson's data show that Fredriksen's companies currently have a total of 29 new ships under construction, including 10 bulk carriers, four medium-sized LPG ships and 15 tankers.

It is understood that Fredriksen's SFL company was founded in 2003, from a pure tanker shipowner gradually developed into one of the world's largest shipowners, in the field of oil tankers, bulk carriers, containers and offshore vessels have investments. As of today, SFL's fleet size is about 76 vessels, including 18 tankers, 15 bulk carriers, 34 container vessels, 7 car carriers and 2 drilling rigs.

The latest order is also SFL's first container ship order with New Era Shipbuilding. New Age

Shipbuilding will reportedly utilize its new docking facilities, which it plans to expand, to build the five vessels. Shipbroker Gibson noted that New Era Shipbuilding is awaiting government approval for a new drydock, and once approved the yard will be able to provide delivery slips for the first quarter of 2027.

New Era Shipbuilding in 2021 to 2022 during the record container ship "order wave" had undertaken dozens of new orders, but with the 2023 container ship newbuilding market boom began to recede, the new Era Shipbuilding's center of gravity of the order again shifted to the field of oil tankers.

Earlier this year it was reported that Greek shipowner Evangelos Marinakis, through its subsidiary Capital Maritime, signed a letter of intent with New Era Shipbuilding for the construction of 10 8,400 TEU dual-fuel LNG-powered containerships, with each new ship costing about $128 million, and expected to be delivered from mid-2027 to 2028.

It is understood that New Era Shipbuilding is a "leader" in the field of LNG dual-fuel shipbuilding. In recent years, New Era Shipbuilding has taken the initiative to respond to the "dual-carbon" development strategy and take the lead in the layout of new energy shipbuilding, actively carrying out the production and research and development of LNG dual-fuel powered ships and LNG fuel tanks, and at the same time, increasing the informatization, digitalization and intelligentization of shipbuilding, and continuously improving the production efficiency and production capacity through the continuous improvement of the production process, making New Era Shipbuilding the first domestic shipbuilder to build large-scale LNG dual-fueled ships. It has become the first local private shipyard to build large-scale LNG dual-fuel vessels in China, and the number of orders received for LNG dual-fuel vessels ranks first in the country.

Excluding the latest order from SFL Corporation, according to Clarkson's data, New Era Shipbuilding has 104 orders of 14,881,200 DWT, including 73 oil tankers, 22 container ships and 9 bulk carriers, among which 48 are LNG-powered ships, namely 1 bulk carrier, 27 oil tankers and 20 container ships, with delivery schedules until 2028. 2028.
